A highly respected UK-based engineering consultancy is seeking an experienced Mechanical Design Lead to support the delivery of major data centre and pharmaceutical projects across Portugal and wider Europe.

This consultancy is known for delivering technically complex, mission-critical facilities for global technology and life-science clients. With a strong reputation for design excellence, long-term client relationships, and a collaborative culture, the business is experiencing sustained growth and is expanding its senior mechanical leadership capability.

As Mechanical Design Lead, you will be responsible for leading the mechanical design strategy across multiple projects, ensuring technical excellence, compliance, and efficient delivery from concept through to construction and commissioning support.

You will act as a key technical authority, working closely with clients, project managers, and multidisciplinary design teams.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead mechanical design delivery across data centre and pharmaceutical projects
  • Take ownership of design quality, technical compliance, and client standards
  • Manage and coordinate mechanical design teams and external consultants
  • Develop and review HVAC, cooling, ventilation, and specialist mechanical systems
  • Ensure designs meet local and international codes, standards, and best practice
  • Interface directly with clients, contractors, and stakeholders
  • Support value engineering, constructability reviews, and risk mitigation
  • Provide technical input during construction, commissioning, and handover phases
  • Mentor and develop junior and intermediate engineers

Requirements

  • Degree qualified in Mechanical or Building Services Engineering
  • 10+ years’ experience in mechanical building services design
  • Strong background in data centres and/or pharmaceutical facilities
  • Proven experience leading mechanical design teams and complex projects
  • Deep technical knowledge of HVAC, cooling strategies, and critical environments
  • Confident client-facing professional with excellent communication skills
  • Ability to work autonomously within a senior leadership position
  • Comfortable working in a hybrid / remote model with travel as required
